The only way to have flourishing, happy plants and trees is to practice smart water management. Drip irrigation systems are designed to apply water directly to your plant's roots, making it possible to keep your plants hydrated with less water. A drip hose is the backbone of the drip irrigation system, and at Ace Hardware, we carry a large inventory of drip tubing and hoses to help keep your plants healthy.

Use our helpful drip irrigation tubing guide to learn about the different types of irrigation pipe options we have.

What is Drip Irrigation Tubing?

Made of polyethylene, drip tubing has emitters positioned at specific intervals along the tubing to correspond to the placement of each tree, shrub or plant. Using a drip irrigation hose to water your plants conserves water while ensuring maximum efficiency when it comes to keeping your plants healthy and thriving. Drip tubing is scalable and often works for both residential and commercial applications, especially in areas where water is scarce.

What Type of Drip Irrigation Tubing Do You Need?

The drip irrigation system uses polyethylene tubing to carry water from the source to the plants. Then, water is dispersed by either soaker drip tubing, emitters, sprinklers or sprayers. To help you find the right solution for your yard, learn about the differences between the two most basic types of drip tubes.

Emitter Drip Tubing

If your plants are evenly spaced, emitter drip tubing may be ideal since it offers uniform water delivery. This type of irrigation hose has pre-punched holes along the tubing every 12 inches, allowing for easy installation. Simply insert the emitter directly into the polyethylene mainline drip irrigation hose and you're ready to go. Gardeners generally prefer emitter drip tubing for use with flowers, shrubs and vegetable or fruit gardens.

Soaker Drip Tubing

If your plants are closer together, soaker drip tubing might be a perfect choice. This type of garden irrigation hose allows water to slowly drip or sweat to eventually soak the ground around where it’s positioned. Soaker driplines have emitters pre-installed every 6, 9 or 12 inches. You can use this flexible material in planter boxes, larger garden beds or large containers.

What's the Difference Between Poly and Vinyl Drip Tubing?

Compared to poly drip tubing, vinyl drip line hoses are made of softer materials that are more flexible, so they may be easier to work with. On the other hand, poly tubing may be a bit stiffer at first, but it comes with its own set of benefits. Poly drip tubing material doesn't expand much when exposed to warmer conditions and withstands damage from UV rays. Since poly tubing is more resistant to expansion, its less likely to make its way off the drippers or fittings. If you live in a warmer environment, poly might be your best bet.
