What is Wood Stain?

Wood stain is used to enrich the grains in various woods by adding depth and color. Unlike paint, stains are formulated to soak into the grains and pigment of wood fibers, as opposed to simply coating them. Once the solvents in the stain cures, the tint permanently binds to the wood.

Common Types of Wood Stains

Wood stains are available in both interior and exterior formulations. Before purchasing a stain, understanding the differences between some of the most common types can be helpful.

Oil Based Wood Stain

Since oil based wood stains contain oil, they repel water to a degree, making them a great option for surfaces that might get wet. Oil based stains contain VOCs, so it's best to use them only in well-ventilated areas. Drying time for these stains is variable, depending on weather conditions.

Gel Wood Stains

Although gel wood stains are actually oil based, they're not as prone to dripping, running or splattering like oil- or water-based stains. Whereas oil based stains have a liquid consistency, gel stains have a thick and smooth texture that won't separate during application. Like other types of stains, only apply these stains in well-ventilated areas.

Water Based Wood Stains

A more environmentally friendly option, water based stains primarily consist of water and the dye that gives them color. Some types contain low amounts of VOCs, though, so application should occur in well-ventilated places. These stains usually dry quickly, typically within just a few hours, and are often applied on interior surfaces like trim and hardwood floors.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wood Stain

Before committing to an entire project, test a wood stain tone first as it can be difficult to reverse. For example, applying a small amount of black wood stain to contained area to see how the stain dries will help you avoid an irreversible mistake. Also, consider the following tips to help you practice safety when applying wood stains:

  • Always keep the stains away from open flames as the chemicals in wood stains are highly flammable.
  • Keep your face and hands protected by wearing disposable latex gloves and a face mask.
  • Keep pets, kids and other vulnerable individuals away whenever you're applying wood stains.
  • Apply stains in well-ventilated areas by either working outdoors or opening several windows.
