Air hoses are essential components for any pneumatic tool setup, providing the necessary connection between air compressors and tools. Whether you're working on automotive repairs, construction projects or DIY projects, shop air hoses at Ace Hardware to find the right tools for your needs.

How to Choose a Compressor Hose

A solid air hose is essential to ensuring a tight connection to your power tool, stable air pressure and consistent power output. With options like normal, recoil and retractable air hoses, here are the main factors to consider when purchasing a new hose.

Air Compressor Hose Lengths

Typically, air compressor hose lengths range from 25 to 250 feet. If you frequently work on projects requiring greater distances from your air compressor, a longer compressor hose is convenient and allows greater mobility. On the other hand, if you regularly work in smaller spaces or tighter quarters, a shorter air compressor hose might be a better option and avoid tangling.

What is the Best Material for Air Hoses?

The material your air hose is made from will significantly affect the weight of the hose, how well it performs and the flexibility of the line.

  • Rubber air hoses: Usually constructed with a blend of PVC, polyurethane and rubber, these air hoses are incredibly durable and flexible so you can easily work on an array of projects. The heaviest types of compressor hoses on the market, rubber air hoses are naturally abrasion-resistant. Rubber air hoses are also not prone to kinking.
  • Polyurethan air hoses: Incredibly lightweight and easy to transport, poly air hoses provide exceptional performance even in extremely cold temperatures. They are known for their durability and hard-wearing properties, which makes them useful for high-pressure applications.
  • PVC air hoses: Durable and abrasion-resistant, PVC air hoses are an economical option. Although not as flexible as poly and rubber air hoses, they're generally easy to maneuver around obstacles and corners without kinking.

What Diameter Do You Need?

The higher the CFM (cubic feet per minute) requirement, the larger internal diameter you'll need to ensure your tool has enough torque to operate. Hand-held air tools like nailers often require 1 to 3 CFM, which should work well with a ¼ inch hose internal diameter. Heavy-duty tools like impact wrenches are more likely to require 6-plus CFM, which will probably require an air hose with an 3/8 inch or ½ inch diameter to function at full capacity.

Air Hose PSI Capacity

Understanding PSI (pounds per square inch) is crucial.

  • Light-duty tools typically require 90-150 PSI
  • Medium-duty tools need 150-300 PSI air hoses
  • Heavy-duty tools may require up to 300 PSI or more

Selecting the appropriate hose diameter ensures efficient airflow and pressure, optimizing tool performance and minimizing pressure drop.

How Do You Prevent Your Air Hose from Kinking?

To prevent kinks in your hose, store the hose properly using hose reels or buying a recoil air hose. Recoil air hoses are designed to minimize kinking due to their design. Avoid sharp bends and twists and inspect the hose regularly for signs of wear or damage.

Can Recoil Air Hoses Handle High-Pressure Applications?

Yes, recoil air hoses can handle high-pressure applications, but it's important to choose a hose rated for the specific pressure requirements of your tools. Always check the manufacturer's specifications to ensure compatibility
