A high-quality jig saw is an essential tool for any well-equipped home workshop. But even the most advanced saw is only as good as its cutting edge, and the jig saw blades collection at Ace contains replacement blades and blade sets to keep you cutting cleanly, accurately, and safely.

T-Shank and U-Shank Jig Saw Blades

Jig saw blades come in two main formats, designed for attaching to different jig saw models. The most common type is a T-shank blade that fixes to the saw using a clamp, making it quick and easy to change. However, some jig saw models use a U-shank connection that needs a screw to secure the blade.

Most modern jig saws can use either kind of blade, but if you're using an older model, it might only be compatible with U-shank blades.

Teeth Per Inch for Jig Saw Blades

Your choice of blade also depends on the material you're sawing through, with different numbers of teeth per inch (TPI) suitable for different jobs. For cutting wood, a flexible blade with relatively few teeth is strong enough to saw cleanly and quickly, with a high level of accuracy that's perfect for precision woodworking. Sawing wood generally requires a blade with a TPI between 6 and 20.

However, for sawing metal, a stronger, more rigid blade with finer teeth is needed to ensure the blade doesn't snap under the strain. Different kinds of metals need different TPI ratings, but as a guide, look for a blade with between 20 and 35 TPI.

For the most versatility, choose a complete jig saw blade set containing a wide variety of TPI ratings so you always have the right blade for the job.

Choice of Blade Metals

There are four main metals used for jig saw blades:

  • High-carbon steel is tough but flexible and ideal for cutting wood and other softer materials.
  • High-speed steel is more rigid and can cut through many metals, including copper and aluminum.
  • Bi-metal blades occupy a middle ground between toughness and flexibility, offering excellent cutting strength and durability but at a slightly higher price.
  • Blades coated with carbide grit make cleaner cuts through fragile materials and are mostly used for ceramics, fiberglass, plasterboard, and other substances that can shatter with pure steel blades.
